A technical overview of the award-winning sustainable transportation programs at UCI will be given by Ron Fleming, Director of Transportation and Distribution Services at the University of California, Irvine.

Please feel free to bring an unwrapped toy with a minimum value of $10 but please NO stuff animals. All toys are welcome but the biggest need is for toys in the age range of 11 to 14 years of age. About the speaker: Ron Fleming has over 15 years of experience directing sustainable transportation initiatives, capital improvement projects, traffic systems, and enforcement programs.  Ron serves as an advocate for innovative and cost-effective transportation programs for the 37,000 faculty, staff, and students who work at or attend UC Irvine.  Ron, who received his BA in English from UC Irvine, earned a Master of Public Administration at the University of La Verne and was named to the prestigious Alpha Chi Honor Society. Mr. Fleming is also the recipient of numerous prestigious awards from the International Parking Institute, the US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Orange County Transportation Agency.

About the topic:  Under Ron Fleming’s direction, the department provides a balance of policy, incentives, and programming that has led to safe, clean parking facilities for those who drive to campus and a wide variety of sustainable transportation measures and support services that give commuters options so they do not have to drive.  Among the successful programs that Fleming has instituted are his Strategic Mobility Plan, which provides incentives for carpooling; Project Greenlight, which is designed to reduce emissions and vehicle miles traveled on campus; and ZotWheels, an exemplary automated bikeshare program that others are planning to replicate. Fleming's environmentally sustainable programs have reduced traffic on and off campus, maintained the right balance of parking spaces to parking needs, and eliminated the additional cost of new lots or structures.  Overall, UC Irvine T&DS’s comprehensive sustainable transportation program annually eliminates over 39 million vehicle miles, 18,600 tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and saves individuals and the university over $21 million.
